KAMLOOPS — Heather Shtuka hopes the release of her son's documentary will raise more awareness about her son's disappearance.

Three local filmmakers have spent several months putting together the story of Ryan Shtuka, a 20-year-old Alberta man who went missing on Feb. 2018 after leaving a house party in the ski town of Sun Peaks, outside of Kamloops.

Heather says the documentary was beautifully done.

"I didn't know which direction they were going to go with it but the cinematography was beautifully done," she says.

When she first saw the completed documentary put together by filmmakers Russell Walton, Jared Featherstone and Allan McVicar of Past 11 Productions she was happy to see the amount of footage taken by drones.

"It really just shows how vast the landscape is," she says.

It's something she appreciates the filmmakers showing because it's a question she gets all the time.

"I think that's the one thing that we hear from so many people 'Well you've been searching for so long, how can you continue to go back? Why do you keep searching and actively searching, like you would have found him by now?''

Shtuka says she hopes the documentary will help people understand how challenging it is to search in the area. She also hopes the film will generate people to be more purposeful when out on their walks and searches in the Sun Peaks area.

The documentary Peaks & Valleys: The Search for Ryan Shtuka will be screened at the Paramount Theatre at 6:30 p.m on Monday July, 15, 2019.

The event is free to the public but donations will be accepted for Kamloops Search and Rescue.

The film will also be released on Storyhive's YouTube channel and on Telus Optik On Demand on July 15.
