KAMLOOPS - A Kamloops Dry Grad committee is raffling off booze to raise money.
The Westsyde Secondary Dry Grad committee is holding a raffle with a grand prize of $350 worth of coolers and beer as a fundraiser for their alcohol free graduation event.
Amanda Wilson with the committee says they came to the idea after hearing about the success other committees had raffling off alcohol, and much dry grad money was raised selling chocolate at liquor stores in B.C.
“Even though people were buying liquor they were donating for kids to have a night without it," she says.
She says the raffle wasn’t their first idea but when other options left them short they decided to do it. She admits they hummed and hawed a bit, but decided it was the right thing to do to reach their fundraising goals.
Wilson says she hasn’t heard of negative feedback about the odd combination of raffling off alcohol for a dry grad event.
The money being raised will be used for a half day of white water rafting for the graduating class followed by an event at the school, she says.
“You don’t need drinking and drugs to have a good time and that’s what we’re trying to promote.”
