KAMLOOPS - It’s Christmas in Kamloops but you aren’t the only one putting up decorations — the Kamloops RCMP are setting up the holiday displays too.

To prepare for the holiday season Kamloops RCMP have placed BAIT cars around town, including shopping malls and other busy areas, according to an RCMP release.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says they are warning car thieves that “bait cars are everywhere.”

Police are putting a holiday twist on the BAIT car program by decking out some of the vehicles with parcels and packages. The goal is to catch thieves who break into vehicles to steal the items inside.

"The BAIT vehicles have been equipped with audio and video equipment that can be tracked and monitored by the police so anyone attempting to steal the vehicle or the items inside, will be quickly apprehended by the Crime Reduction Unit," Shelkie says in the release.

Even though there are bait cars in place, she says the best way to protect your property is to lock your vehicle and don’t leave any valuables inside.
