Kamloops city councillor taking a leave of absence after cancer diagnosis

Coun. Marg Spina.

KAMLOOPS - A veteran Kamloops city councillor is taking a leave of absence to fight breast cancer.

Coun. Marg Spina will take some time off to deal with the cancer diagnosis. While it’s a loss to council, Mayor Peter Milobar says the focus should be on her health.

“I’ve had a discussion with Coun. Spina,” he says. “Our bigger concern right now is her healing and getting well.”

Spina is currently serving a third term as city councillor. She was elected for the first time in 2008 and re-elected in 2011 and 2014. Milobar says she alerted him last week when she found out.

During her absence Spina’s voice will be missed at council, especially during budget time, he says.

“She’s a pretty strong willed lady,” he says. “It’s her perspective on things; it’ll be certainly missed around the table.”

While she’s away Milobar says council will be supportive and willing to help in whatever way it can.

“It’s obviously a big shock,” he says. “She’s figuring her way through with family and friends.”
