Kamloops band launches musical advent calendar for charity

An up-and-coming Kamloops band has launched a unique fundraising campaign to raise money for the Salvation Army.

Loops has launched an online musical advent calendar that will run until Christmas Eve. Loops' two members Kevin Roy and Jon Fennell will release a new music video each day at noon on their Facebook and Instagram accounts.

The songs will be their take on Christmas carols. Roy and Fennell got the idea for the calendar from a charity project they did last month.

"We started noticing a lot of stories at the start of November about how the poppy sales were really impacted by COVID," vocalist Roy said.

They decided to host an online concert with proceeds going to the Kamloops Legion, getting their music out into the community at the same time.

"Because we had such success with that, we figured if we could extrapolate that, instead of doing a live show change it up a little bit," he said.

The two brainstormed and came up with the musical advent calendar, with the proceeds going to a different charity in need.

"The Salvation Army felt like the perfect fit because it was the same as the poppy sales, they can't really raise money right now because of COVID," Roy said.  "A lot of them are seniors who ring a bell at Walmart, but they can't really do that now."

The duo will raise money for the Salvation Army through several prize draws, featuring donated items, gift cards and passes from local businesses.

"We've gotten even more sponsors than we imagined already, within the first couple days of the promotion," Roy said. "Right now we're planning on having half a dozen gift baskets… it's getting bigger and bigger, we might end up making more prizes."

To enter the draw, donate $5 to the virtual Salvation Army kettle and follow Loops on either Facebook or Instagram. Doing this will get you one entry into the prize draws. To get two entries, follow them on both social media platforms.

For additional entries, you must tag three people on the Loops' daily advent calendar music video. Tagging friends on a video will get you one more entry, and you can continue to do this for every video they release until Dec. 24.

Tagging three friends on the daily video on both social media platforms will get you two entries per day.

You can get up to 50 entries in the draws, and the minimum donation is only $5. If you're a local business interested in donating to the Loops prize draw, send them an email here.

Loops formed only a short time ago in the spring of 2019. Roy and Fennell are full-time musicians, and typically play a mix of acoustic covers and original songs.
