Investigation still early in fiery Kamloops death

Authorities are still trying to identify the person whose body was found in a fire in Kamloops on Oct. 29, 2022.

Kamloops RCMP is still working to identify the person found dead on the North Shore this weekend, along with whether or not their death was criminal.

A fire investigator was still at the scene Sunday evening piecing together what happened when the fire erupted behind the closed Dynasty Gardens restaurant, Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said in an email on Oct. 30.

Police haven't yet determined whether criminality was involved in the person's death. The cause of death hasn't yet been determined.

A patrolling officer came upon the fire in a shed behind the restaurant while patrolling the 100-block of Palm Street. The officer tried to extinguish the blaze while waiting on firefighters to arrive around 7:30 a.m., Oct. 29.

A nearby restaurant owner said people living without shelter frequent the area. However, it's unclear whether the person found in the shed was homeless.

Police haven't publicly identified the person, but Shoihet said it's difficult to say how long the process could take for investigators to identify them. She added that it is "unlikely" the person will be publicly identified by police if there's no criminality suspected.

While Kamloops RCMP investigate the circumstances around the Saturday morning fire, the B.C. Coroners Service is also investigating the cause of the person's death.
