Interior Health’s top doctor was arrested today on sexual assault charges out of Alberta.
Dr. Albert De Villiers has been charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference following a Grande Prairie RCMP investigation, Cpl. Curtis Peters said tonight, June 8.
The story was first reported by Global Okanagan.
He couldn’t confirm whether De Villiers was still in custody or when he would be in court on the charges.
He also couldn’t offer any information on when the alleged offence occurred.
Dr. De Villiers took over as chief medical health officer in August 2020.
Previously he worked out of Grande Prairie as the lead medical health officer with Alberta’s north zone. He originally came to Canada from South Africa.
Interior Health said they will be appointing a temporary interim CMHO Wednesday to function for the week, and Dr. Sue Pollock will be in the position starting next week.
