Interior Health is warning residents of a contaminated drug supply in Vernon, Kamloops and Kelowna.
Two warnings were issued by the health authority, June 3, warning residents in Kelowna and Vernon that drugs being sold as meth contain both benzodiazepines and meth, meaning naloxone will not reverse the effects of this substance.
Being sold as a colourless crystal, side effects for this substance can include: sleepiness, memory loss, altered thinking, delusions of safety and sobriety, risky behavior, and passing out, according to the health authority. Sedation can last for a few minutes to hours.
The alert is in effect until June 8.
An alert was also issued for Kamloops, June 1, warning of a purple chunky substance being sold as down and fentanyl containing benzodiazepines.
There is a high risk of overdose and death with this substance, according to Interior Health. There is also the risk of unconsciousness that cannot be resolved with naloxone.
Symptoms include: more drowsy than usual, memory loss, nausea, heavy nodding and dizziness. The Kamloops alert is in effect until June 7.
The health authority is asking users to check their drugs before using them, use them at an overdose prevention site, avoid using alone or get the LifeGuard app and be aware of the risk of mixing drugs.
