MAPLE RIDGE - An inmate found unresponsive at a women's prison in Maple Ridge and pronounced dead at hospital was a resident of Vernon prior to incarceration.
The woman's family has been notified and she has been indentified as April Peregooda, 51.
Ridge Meadows RCMP were called to the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women November 22. Foul play was suspected prompting police to call in the Integrated Investigation Team to conduct a murder investigation.
"This investigation is in the initial stages and IHIT is looking to obtain information and motive and circumstances leading up to the homicide by speaking with other inmates," Ridge Meadows Sgt. Jennifer Pound says. "One female has been arrested in connection to this homicide, however, there have been no charges laid thus far."
An autopsy was scheduled to help confirm the cause of death.
