Vernon Winter Carnival organizers unveiled the theme of 2022’s carnival in a quirky video and it may come as a surprise to some residents.
This year’s winter carnival will be themeless, so residents can celebrate however they want, according to the YouTube video posted by the Vernon Winter Carnival. The video was published April 22.
The 2022 festival will be the city’s 62nd event.
When Vernon Winter Carnival started 61 years ago there was no theme. The theme wasn’t incorporated into the festival until 1985, according to a news release from festival organizers.
Previous to carnival themes the community got involved and showed their carnival spirit however they wanted to.
“After a year of restrictions, we really want to allow the community to celebrate carnival without any limitations,” said Vicki Proulx, executive director of Vernon Winter Carnival, in the news release.
The society hopes people will host an event with whatever theme they choose, recreate something from a past carnival or just enjoy all things winter in the North Okanagan.
“We’re not sure where we’ll be for COVID-19 restrictions by the time we get into full swing planning for the 2022 festival but we hope that going themeless will allow Vernon Winter Carnival to get back to its roots and open the door for a new generation to support promoting Vernon as a winter destination and fostering community spirit,” she said.

The video features local politicians, media and organizers of the event tossing around a paper to unveil the 2022 theme for the event, which they’re all excited about.
The carnival is Western Canada’s largest winter event and will take place Feb. 4 to 13, 2022.
