iN VIDEO: Surf's up on Kicking Horse River in Golden after ice jam breaks

The Kicking Horse River in Golden looked pretty serene before an upstream ice jam broke apart and caused an icy wave to come crashing down.

The phenomenon was witnessed and recorded by Patrick Sengers.

His video captures the river while it’s still calm and appearing slightly turquoise with frozen surfaces on both sides.

Anyone who’s familiar with the little mountain town will recognize the Kicking Horse pedestrian bridge in the video.

As the crushing flow of ice and water make their way closer to where Sengers is recording, the solid ice that was frozen to both sides of the river can be seen and heard breaking apart.

The first few waves almost look big enough to surf on and still show the colours of a glacial-fed river.

But it’s not long before the river is full of chunks of ice, looking grey, brown and murky.

The aftermath of the ice jam showed no signs of slowing down before the video comes to an end after 96 seconds.
