A Penticton man captured video in which the sound of gunshots could be heard and later found a bullet hole in his neighbour’s barbecue after an incident early Sunday morning.

Steve Richmond said the shots rang out at the corner of Wade Avenue and Van Horne Street, at 1:48 a.m., June 26.

In the morning, Richmond said he spotted a bullet in the barbecue of his neighbour’s house.

“In the house there was a mom with a pretty much newborn baby… if the bullet would have been six inches higher, it would have gone right through the living room,” Richmond said.

He had the window open and could clearly hear the shots as well as screaming and fighting among a group of people, he said.

Since living in the neighbourhood for more than two years, Richmond has dealt with multiple instances of break ins at his house and his vehicle, he said.

The Penticton RCMP said when police officers arrived, they learned a group of friends were walking back from a social event when they were approached by an unknown man.

The man singled out one of the men and began to assault him. One of the other members of the group intervened to try and protect their friend. As they were fending off the man, another unknown man approached from a distance, drew a handgun and fired several indiscriminate shots, according to the RCMP's press release.

The group of men were able to run away uninjured, according to the RCMP.

“Miraculously, no one was seriously harmed as a result of this alarming incident,” says Const. James Grandy, in the news release. “The group were visiting from out of town, and none were allegedly acquainted with either suspect. This appears to be a non-targeted altercation with an unknown motive."

Penticton's mayor John Vassilaki says he is grateful no one was injured in the incident, calling the actions of the suspects "reckless and unacceptable."

“The news of shots being fired on a Penticton street is deeply disturbing for all residents and, especially, for those living in the neighbourhood," he says in a statement. "I ask that anyone with any information on this brazen activity contact the RCMP immediately."

If you witnessed this incident, or have any other information, you are asked to call the Penticton RCMP at 250-492-4300, or remain completely anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
