The Regional District of Central Okanagan added 25 regional parks to Canada’s protected areas network.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault commended the district for adding these parks to the Canadian Protected and Conserved Database, according to a press release.

“This commitment has helped move us closer to conserving 30 percent of land and water by 2030—and in this incredibly important work, every effort counts,” Guilbeault said in the release.

The federal government has invested more than $5 billion dollars into the campaign to preserve 30 per cent of Canadian land and water.

The district’s board chair Loyal Wooldridge said this is about addressing climate change and giving the public access to nature for the future.

“The Regional District of Central Okanagan, located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded land of the syilx/Okanagan people, is dedicated to preserving the biodiversity of our region for future generations. We continue to prioritize local conservation efforts to showcase our breathtaking landscapes and protect vital habitats for endangered species,” Wooldridge said in the release.

Of the 1,597 at risk species in BC 48 of them are in the Central Okanagan. There are 30 regional parks in Central Okanagan totalling more than 2,100 hectares of parkland.
