Almost all of thirty dachshunds rescued from breeder in the Okanagan will be in their forever homes for the holidays.

In late September, the dogs were rescued and brought into the care of the BC SPCA after they were found living in terrible conditions. The SPCA didn't say where in the Okanagan the breeder was located. Many of the dogs had health conditions such as dental disease, overgrown nails and exposure to high ammonia levels. The dogs were kept in small crates in which the beds were covered in urine and feces.

Three of the dogs were pregnant at the time and have since given birth to a total of 11 puppies, according to a BC SPCA media release issued today, Nov. 20. The first litter is now six-weeks-old, the second is three-weeks-old and the last litter is now one-week-old. The moms and pups are being taken care of by experienced fosters.

Three of the puppies were not healthy and died. One pup struggled to feed, but with bottle feeding and around-the-clock care is making incredible progress, the SPCA said. The rest of the puppies are doing well.

“Each of the dogs and puppies has been getting tailored care to address their needs including grooming, vaccinations, dental treatments, and specialized diets,” read the release. “In the best possible news, almost all of the thirty dachshunds that were seized have been adopted and will be in their forever homes for the holidays.”

The puppies won’t be available for adoption until they are eight-weeks-old.
