A fight broke out on a Kelowna bus last night after a man was filmed hurling racist comments at a group of women.

The video, which has been shared on Facebook, shows a man muttering on a Kelowna bus before telling a group of woman that “it’s not a Hindu country” before calling them “terrorists.”

The video was taken shortly after 6 p.m., Oct. 31, on the number 8 bus in the city.

The person hurling the racist epitaphs also appears to get into a fight with others on the bus who appear to be trying to intercede.

Jamie Weiss, senior public relations officer with B.C. Transit, said in a written statement the organization is aware of the incident which was reported by the bus driver, who then checked and confirmed there were no physical injuries.

"And while passengers were asked if they wanted to report the incident to police, they declined at that time. B.C. Transit is carrying out an internal investigation, which includes reviewing CCTV footage from the bus. The organization will also fully support any further police investigation into this matter, as is our policy," Weiss said in the statement.

"Though incidents of this nature are rare on B.C. Transit buses, the organization takes reports of inappropriate and illegal behaviour, including racist or derogatory comments, within our systems very seriously," Weiss said. "If someone is the victim of an inappropriate or illegal activity, or sees something that is inappropriate or illegal on the bus, please tell the operator immediately or call the police."

Kelowna RCMP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
