Cam Whitcomb of Kamloops won praise from American Idol judges after showing off his country twang.

The 18-year-old motorcycle mechanic and pipeline worker took home the golden ticket to Hollywood after performing "Rock, Salt and Nails" by Waylon Jennings last night, March 21.

Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Ritchie judge the 20th season of the singing competition, and although they voiced hesitance, a "yes" from two of them gave Whitcomb a ticket to the next round of the competition.

"I think there's something there. If you can trust us Americans... it's a yes from me," Perry said on this week's audition episode. "It's a yes from me."

Whitcomb told the judges his performing experience was limited, save for singing in front of family.

"I've never had any vocal lessons or any of that stuff," he said.

Despite a seeming lack of experience, judges saw potential in Whitcomb's natural talents. Approval from Perry and Bryan had Whitcomb backflipping in celebration, with the golden ticket in hand.

American Idol airs on CityTV and ABC on Sundays and Mondays at 8 p.m.
