Kamloops Search and Rescue and RCMP air services are busy searching the Thompson River and its shoreline for a man who went under the water yesterday evening and didn’t resurface.
On Sunday July 6, 2025, at approximately 5:14 p.m. police received a call from the BC Ambulance Service just after 5 p.m. to assist with a possible drowning along the Thompson River where a group were playing volleyball on the north shore just east of the Overlanders Bridge.
“According to the report a man entered the river to retrieve a volleyball and got caught in the undercurrent,” said spokesperson for Kamloops RCMP Corp. Dana Napier Kamloops in a media release issued on July 7.
“Two more men from the group who entered the water to assist were also caught in the current. Two of the initial three were saved while the third appeared to be pulled away and went under the water.”
At roughly the same time, the Kamloops fire department was called in to assist.
“We came in as a water rescue and sent two apparatus in engines to observe the river channel for visible signs of the person,” said spokesman for Kamloops Fire Rescue, Ryan Cail.
No one was located and Kamloops Fire Rescue ended the search and it was passed on to Kamloops Search and Rescue and the RCMP dive team.
Rescue teams mobilized for a swiftwater rescue at roughly 6:30 p.m. yesterday, July 6 and the search continued starting at 6 a.m. today, according to KSAR statements on social media.
The missing man has been identified and is a TRU international student, and investigators are working with the RCMP’s Foreign Domestic Liaison Unit to contact his family. His name is not being released at this time.
Kamloops Search and Rescue is asking the public to avoid search areas and give crews lots of space. Police are asking that the public to please remain on the lookout along the shorelines and to please contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file number 2025-21574.
