Horror-themed Darkfest is bringing an all-Canadian film lineup to Kamloops.

It features four films on two consecutive Saturdays, bringing horror flicks to the Kamloops Film Festival for the sixth year in a row.

While viewers will be spared the blood and guts of a slasher flick, they can expect films that are still dark, likely to give viewers a haunting experience.

"A lot of people, I think, when they see a horror film they automatically think it's going to be like some slice and dice, some gore-fest. Whereas a lot of the movies that we screen are absolutely not like that," organizer Robin Goodfellow said.

"I won't say we haven't screened films like that because that is a reality of the horror genre, but a lot of what we're screening is just like a little bit darker and it might ask some of the heavier questions."

Goodfellow said the film society wanted to add horror films to its festival lineup, so she and her to friends behind their horror-themed podcast Drunk in a Graveyard curated darker titles for the event.

While the film festival began, Feb. 29, reels for Darkfest won't be loaded until March 2, starting with a short film written and directed by a local filmmaker.

Occult Vortex by Riley Journeay is the second of the teenager's films to be featured at Darkfest.

Last year, the entire theatre cheered at the end of Journeay's first film The Hogwash Experiment.

"To see a young filmmaker, I think he was like 17 or maybe even 16 at the time, get a whole theatre clapping for his work, that's really cool. Supporting someone who clearly is going to go somewhere with what they're doing, I think that's meaningful," Goodfellow said.

That will be followed by Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, which follows the story of a young vampire who is reluctant to kill for food.

On March 9, the second pair of showings will include Giltrude's Dwelling, a 2019 short film by Vancouver director Jeremy Lutter, and his feature length film Zoe.mp4
