A bystander during a Kamloops armed robbery this past summer put himself on the line when he pulled a shotgun away from a would-be robber.

iNFOnews.ca previously reported the armed robbery and the bystander's efforts, but surveillance footage recently posted online shows the moment the bystander took his chance to disarm the culprit.

James Robert Levi Black, born in 1995, was charged in August for the attempted robbery at a North Shore gas station.

Video footage sent to iNFOnews.ca at the time appeared to be recorded by the vigilante himself, who apologized to RCMP for taking the risk and pulling a shotgun out of the suspect's hands.

Surveillance footage from above the cashier shows the bystander, whose name is not known by iNFOnews.ca, putting one arm around the suspect's neck while he tried to force the shotgun away with the other. A second man joined in to help.

"I'm sorry for taking that chance guys, but I looked, I was paying attention, the gun was pointing in the air — I'm sorry, but I took that chance," he said to RCMP during the Aug. 18 incident.

Police were called that evening to the gas station where the masked suspect was reported to have entered carrying the shotgun. According to police, there were two civilians that helped restrain Black before officers arrived.

“Luckily, no one was physically hurt in this high-risk situation and the man was taken into custody without further incident,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said at the time.

Black has yet to be sentenced for the crime and remains in custody with another court date scheduled for Dec. 29.
