The Okanagan Chinese Canadian Association is celebrating the year of the ox online since the pandemic has put a pause on events.

The video contains a message from association president Hua Meng as well as traditional dance, music and other performances celebrating the start of the Lunar New Year today, Feb. 12.

In Chinese culture, the ox is a valued animal. Because of its role in agriculture, it has positive characteristics such as being hardworking and honest. It is the second of all the zodiac animals.

Oxen never look for praise or to be the centre of attention. This often hides their talent, but they’ll gain recognition through their hard work, according to chinesenewyear.net.

They believe in their role and that everyone should do what is asked of them.

"Though they are kind, it’s difficult for them to understand persuasion using pathos. Rarely losing your temper, they think logically and make great leaders," according to the website.

They’re most compatible with the rat, snake and rooster
