iN RESPONSE: Readers have their say

Following are emailed reader responses to stories or letters to the editor for the first week of September 2024. They have been edited slightly for readability.

BC United candidate in Okanagan unsure of what happens to his campaign funds

Terrible news. BC United is still a crooked party after all these years. Join the BC NDP quickly as there are no candidates that I know of for West Kelowna. — Devon Johnstone

JONESIE: The homeless political centre in BC

You are spot on Marshall. I have been reaching out to BC United MLAs and encouraging them to run as independents with the hope that they might hold the balance of power against BC Conservative leader John Rustad and Premier David Eby. Thousands of voters have no home now thanks to Falcon and the BC United Board. — Wayne Pierce

You have hit the nail on the head! When Kevin Falcon jumped ship, leaving excellent people without a party my mind was made up. I wouldn't vote for a conservative if I was paid! I hope the man is not elected he deserves retirement like he forced so many good people into! — Doreen Rondquist

B.C. Conservatives recruit three more BC United MLAs, shaking up candidate list

So, we really don't have any principles, we just want to get a new job paying way more money than we used to get. To quote Hillary Clinton, "a basket of deplorables." — Bonnie Derry

Misplaced evidence delayed Kamloops serial rapist's charge for years

In Canada we have, or at least we used to have, a sentence called Dangerous Offender and if you were declared that you were locked up until you proved you were no longer a threat to society. If this person doesn't deserve that, I say why have it? This is serial behaviour that needs serious help to ever be fit to be free again. — Dick Dawson

'Makes absolutely no sense': Summerland council angered by provincial approval of controversial gravel pit

Sadly, I bet there are a few side deals that lead to this. Modern politics is so dirty in the upper levels now, that I think most people have lost all trust in those who hold these positions. — Dick Dawson

Construction to begin on third tiny home project for homeless people in Kelowna

Dear Marshall,

Nice to know that Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas is happy with the tiny homes. He needs to try living there for 4 days or a week.

It would be great to hear from the people that are living in these communities as to how it's working for them. They sure are visibly repulsive, lacking any type of vibrancy or beauty. Are there gardens? Is the kitchen stocked?  Cooking and nutrition classes? Instructors for hobbies?

Thanks for the great newsletter each day. Love the iNwordl challenge.

Sincerely,
Joan Johnston - Kelowna

iN RESPONSE

Mine along with the majority of voters will receive no representation thanks to our terrible electoral system. First Past the Post or 'Winner Takes All' are just placebo democracies. Whoever gets the most seats, not votes, wins the dictatorship for the next four years. Guess where the majority of seats are? Not the Interior that’s for sure. I’ve lived my entire life under dictatorships of one ideology or other and that’s not going to change until the voters educate themselves on our highly flawed democracy. — Anthony Plourde
