Kamloops and the Okanagan are overall drier climates so when it rains some local photographers grabbed their cameras and took to city streets for artistic perspectives.

Kamloops photographer Derek Ens loves photographing his city at night for the moody vibes, and a recent rainfall made his photos pop with colour.

“I love night photography because it adds so much more drama and almost romance to a photo," he said. "Shooting in or just after a rain creates interesting reflections as you can see in the photos."

Ens has been experimenting behind the lens for a few years and learned a few tricks for doing night photography.

“I do have many tricks, just the right lens and I use a diffusion filter to get the lights to bloom like that,” he said. "I do a lot of black and white photography as well, it lends a very classic look to a scene."

Kelowna resident Neil Thacker strolls through the city with his camera at all hours of the day and night to find unique perspectives on ordinary things, and this month he photographed downtown Kelowna streets in the dawn hours during a rainfall.

These rainy day photographs show our city centres in a more unusual way and lend a bright and artistic look at a dark, dreary season.
