The owner of a bed and breakfast in Kelowna has created an enchanting French-Italian renaissance style garden for his guests to enjoy.

Marriánno Alessándrov runs Villa Bellissimo FranTalia that attracts travellers from European countries. He created a gardenscape called Versalière Botanicella that is nothing short of spectacular.

“We have a villa and garden that have a merged French and Italian style,” he said. “I like to impress my guests. Not many B&Bs have this kind of idea, so I’ve become a pioneer.”

Originally from Taiwan, Alessándrov did extensive research on traditional French and Italian garden designs to create a unique setting with manicured trees and shrubs, statues and lights all designed to transport viewers to Europe. The classical garden designs emerged in the 17th century and emphasize order and harmony, with paths, flower beds, lawns and water features in perfect alignment and dotted with statues and sculpted trees.

Alessándrov made his a Canadian rendition.

“I have a strong sense to make things pretty, and I like designing and landscaping,” he said. “Europeans like quality in a peaceful location. I didn't want to make something ordinary, I wanted to it to be the best."

He carefully prunes and trains a variety of species of tree into desired shapes as they grow. The only classical feature that is missing is a water feature.

“It’s traditional to have this kind of feature but we’re in Canada and the season is short, and for the size of the property it doesn’t make sense,” he said.

Seventy per cent of Alessándrov's guests are from Europe and mostly Germany, Britain, France and Italy. He is passionate about giving them an immersive experience where architecture, design and garden artistry come together.

“I feel proud of myself for what I’ve created and privileged I’ve had a chance to demonstrate my skill and design,” he said. “I don’t just want to enjoy it myself, I want my neighbours and guests to as well.”
