A woman in the Shuswap discovered some interesting ice formations on Little Shuswap Lake calling them a “once in a lifetime” spectacle.

When Teresa Olynyk went out with her camera to spend time on the lake near Chase, she saw formations about 30 feet long and three feet high.

“They were like ice caves, I could have crawled through them but of course it would be too wet,” she said. “This was the first time I’d seen anything like it. They were something to see.”

The phenomena is known as ice ridges, according to University of B.C. professor of earth and ocean sciences Susan Allen.

“Ice ridges are caused by the plates of ice moving together,” Allen said in an email to iNFOnews.ca, Feb. 21. “Something has to give and so they push up. The plates of ice can move together because of wind or water currents.”

Olynyk has lived in the Shuswap for several years and enjoys all the natural surroundings have to offer.

“We are outdoor people and we enjoy the sunsets and sunrises here,” she said. “We watch the bald eagles and white swans. We have even seen otters here. The ice formations were exciting to see.”
