An experienced photographer got a surprise when she was camping at Shuswap Lake Provincial Park a few days ago.

Ann Steenhuysen and her partner first noticed vehicles parked at the Scotch Creek Bridge and took a closer look.

“We were so excited there was a salmon run happening,” she said. “My partner and I spent at least an hour just watching and taking photos.”

There was a mix of sun and cloud that day, so Steenhuysen had to capture the moments when the sun lit up the water and colourful fish.

“The water was shallow so I waited to capture the fish when their heads popped up and got some shots of their teeth,” she said.

Steenhuysen lives in Chase and spends lots of time in her RV camping around the province taking photos of wildlife and landscapes that she sells at local farmers markets.

“Photographing the fish was an unexpected and wonderful experience,” she said.

The salmon run in Scotch Creek is not to be confused with the Adams River run which is known as one of the world’s largest sockeye salmon run.
