A photojournalist's image of the raging McDougall Creek wildfire in West Kelowna this summer is featured in Time magazine's list of the top 100 photos of 2023.

The photo shows fiery red embers and flames swallowing trees as the fire makes its way down the mountain to a row of lakefront homes.

The McDougall Creek wildfire photograph, taken by Darryl Dyck at The Canadian Press, showcases the magnitude and global significance of this year's fire season and captures the horror felt by many local residents during this devastating event, according to Time Magazine.

The list, selected by Time's photography team, is unranked and chosen from the thousands of images sent to the magazine daily.

"What has become clear in 2023 — a year dominated by the rapid rise of AI imagery — is that photojournalism has become more important than ever," Katherine Pomerantz, director of photography, said in the article.

"The storytellers who are dedicated to bearing witness to events across the globe in real time are critical in providing lucidity to an otherwise muddled world. We hope that you’ll take some time to reflect on the year that was, with thoughtfulness, clarity and wonder."

Among the other nominees are photographs of globally recognized and catastrophic events, such as a girl being lifted from the rubble of an earthquake in Turkey, the worn hands of a Ukrainian soldier, and a Palestinian woman holding her child in the rubble of Gaza.
