Hot and sunny in Okanagan this week

This is a week to spend lazy afternoons by the pool, lake or river as Environment Canada calls for mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius this week.

It’s safe to say summer has arrived in the Okanagan.

There is a chance of showers tomorrow and Wednesday night, but otherwise the weather in the Okanagan this week should be ideal for those summer activities you’ve been waiting to do.

If it seems like that summer forecast has been elusive in this part of the country this year, you’re right. The Weather Network reports as of mid-July, Vancouver had not seen a single day this year where the high reached 25 C, compared to Toronto, where the city recorded a high of 25 C or more 39 times. That should change this week, as today could be the warmest of the year so far in Vancouver with a high of 27 C expected.

Environment Canada says to expect sunny skies and a high of 31 Celsius in Vernon and Kelowna today, July 20, and 32 C in Penticton with winds becoming southeast at 20 km/h this afternoon. Tonight should see partly cloudy skies along with a low of 15 C in all three cities.

There is a 30 per cent chance of showers Tuesday morning under a mix of sun and clouds before clearing in the afternoon. Tuesday’s high should reach 31 C in Vernon and Kelowna, 32 C in Penticton, with an overnight low of 16 C in all three cities. Winds are expected from the south at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 in the afternoon.

Wednesday should see a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 28 C in the Okanagan. There’s a 70 per cent chance of showers overnight Wednesday with a low temperature of 14 C expected.

From Thursday through Sunday the forecast can be summed up in one word – sunny.

Thursday and Friday should see highs around 27 C, with lows of about 13 C.

It warms up again for the weekend with a high of 29 C on Saturday and a high of 30 C on Sunday with overnight lows around 13 C.

Normal temperatures at this time of year in the Okanagan are highs of 27 C and lows of 12 C.
