If you want to decrease your chances of having your vehicle stolen in Canada, avoid buying SUVs and pickup trucks.
The Honda CR-V four-door SUV ranked number one, three and six on the list of most stolen vehicles in 2020, according to insurance comparison platform HelloSafe.ca. The ranking depended on the model year, with the 2018 model being most stolen, followed by 2017 and 2019 models.
Number two on the list was the 2017 LEXUS RX350/RX450 four-door SUV. Different years for the same model came in at number four and nine.
Also on the SUV front, the Toyota Highlander for 2018 and 2017 took seventh and eighth spots.
Rounding out the list were the 2018 Ford F-150 (fifth) and the 2017 Dodge ram 1500 (tenth). Both are pickup trucks.
The most popular vehicles for thieves in B.C. and Alberta were Ford F-350 pick-up trucks.
The data is based on information compiled by Statistics Canada and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
Alberta ranked number one for the highest rate of thefts at 53.84 per 10,000 population in 2019, the most recent data the company said was available. B.C. came in fifth at 26.33 per 10,000.
The total number of auto thefts for 2019 was just over 87,000. Almost 50,000 were in Alberta and Ontario. About 14,000 were stolen in B.C.
While some vehicles are stolen for resale, either domestically or abroad, some are used to commit other crimes and some are stolen just so the thief can get somewhere else, the company said.
