KAMLOOPS - A homeless count conducted in late March has identified nearly 200 individuals dealing with homelessness in Kamloops.

The City of Kamloops along with other not for profit organizations and businesses conducted the first National Point-in-Time count in the city in an effort to measure homelessness across Canada.

In a media release issued by the City of Kamloops today, June 15, the count revealed 114 individuals identified as being homeless during the street count, 66 individuals completed the survey while staying at an emergency shelter and ten individuals were classified as dependents, meaning they were under the age of 14.

The city says this is the minimum number of individuals being affected by homelessness in Kamloops.

A similar survey was launched last month aimed to measure hidden homelessness among youth in Kamloops by A Way Home Kamloops. The city says the data for this survey will be released soon.

In the past, the Kamloops homeless counts have been conducted in the fall with the most recent count from October 2016 showing 100 individuals experiencing homelessness. The media release says the city did not conduct a count in 2017 to better align with the national effort and funding.
