Stanley Cup takes time out from summer tour with LA Kings to star in 3D film

PENTICTON, B.C. - It may not have its own trailer or personal assistant, but one of the best-known trophies in sport is hard at work as the star of a 3D film being shot in Penticton, B.C.

The Stanley Cup, the coveted symbol of National Hockey League domination, is the focus of the high-tech film being created for the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The short feature, entitled "Stanley Cup Odyssey," is being shot at Memorial Arena in Penticton, about 400 kilometres east of Vancouver.

The Hockey Hall of Fame and Network Entertainment Inc. announced early last month that they had partnered to produce the film, with plans for a premiere as part of the 2012 Hall of Fame induction weekend in Toronto Nov. 9-12.

Okanagan film commissioner Jon Summerland says the film is an historical feature using original live action filming, computer generated animation, and classic archival footage to recount the Stanley Cup's storied history, with room for new playoff highlights to be added in future years.

Filming in Penticton is expected to wrap this Friday and, once the final cut is aired in November before hall of fame inductees Pavel Bure, Matts Sundin, Joe Sakic and Adam Oates, it will be released as a collectors DVD in both 2D and 3D formats. (CKQQ, CKFR)
