NEW YORK, N.Y. - Carey Price and Bobby Ryan got the call. P.K. Subban and Erik Karlsson did not.

Price of the Montreal Canadiens and Ryan of the Ottawa Senators are among 42 players named to participate in the NHL all-star game later this month in Columbus. Each Canadian team has one representative, with Subban not making the cut.

Montreal forward Max Pacioretty said he wasn't surprised about his goaltender being selected. He was caught off guard, however, when he found out after a 2-1 overtime loss to Pittsburgh that Subban had been left off the all-star roster.

"There's no one else, just Carey? I didn't know that at all," Pacioretty said. "No P.K.? No way. You would have thought a team that was in first place earlier this week, you would have thought … maybe get a little more respect."

Price called his selection to the all-star team an "honour."

"It's always a fun experience," the Montreal goalie said. "It's definitely an honour to go and represent my team. I'm looking forward to it. It should be a really good time."

Ryan is going for the first time, along with Mark Giordano of the Calgary Flames, Radim Vrbata of the Vancouver Canucks and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Edmonton Oilers.

"I thought there was a good chance that I'd probably go, but you never know right to the end," Giordano said before the Flames' game in Vancouver. "I'm kind of excited to see what it's all about."

Said Ryan: "I think everyone who is on the ballot always wants to get that one opportunity and it came this year. I'm excited. It's going to a great weekend."

Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs was named to his third all-star game and Dustin Byfuglien of the Winnipeg Jets his second. Byfuglien was picked as a defenceman after moving back to that position this season.

On Saturday night the league announced the remaining 36 all-stars who will join the six voted into the game by fans: the Buffalo Sabres' Zemgus Girgensons and Chicago Blackhawks' Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Corey Crawford.

That did not include Subban, the 2013 Norris Trophy winner who's considered one of the most exciting playmakers in the league. The all-star game seems built for his style, but the NHL had a tough squeeze to get every team at least one player.

Nugent-Hopkins is looking forward to the loose game.

"It's just a fun game, guys are just going out there having fun moving the puck around and trying to run up the score as much as possible," he said in Edmonton.

Reigning Hart Trophy winner Sidney Crosby is set to make his first appearance since 2007, joined by Pittsburgh Penguins teammate Evgeni Malkin. Crosby was chosen for four previous all-star games but did not play because of injury.

A few of this year's MVP candidates — Tyler Seguin of the Dallas Stars, Roberto Luongo of the Florida Panthers and Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators — will be there, too.

The league's leading scorer and only player with 50 points, Jakub Voracek of the Philadelphia Flyers, returns to Columbus where he spent his first three NHL seasons with the Blue Jackets.

Former Blue Jackets star Rick Nash, who has 25 goals for the New York Rangers, will get a homecoming, as well.

Giordano was a no-brainer as he's tied for the league lead in points among defencemen.

"Numbers are funny sometimes," said Giordano, who has 10 goals and 26 assists. "I just and try and be consistent and try and sort of play the same way as much as I can every night. ... I'm trying to take a lot of pride in playing tough minutes and playing them well."

Every NHL team was represented among the 42 players, though within hours of the announcement it was unclear if that would happen. Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard was taken off the ice in Washington with a groin injury.

Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky and forwards Ryan Johansen, Nick Foligno will be there for the host Blue Jackets.

The NHL all-star weekend goes from Jan. 23-25 and includes the fantasy draft Friday night, skills competition Saturday and game Sunday.

All-star captains will be announced at a later date.

Darryl Sutter of the Los Angeles Kings, by virtue of winning the Stanley Cup, and Peter Laviolette of the Predators, the team with the most points at the halfway point, will be the coaches.

Six rookies, including Calgary's Johnny Gaudreau and Ottawa's Mike Hoffman, will take part in the skills competition but not play in the game.

This is the first all-star game since 2012 in Ottawa, after a hiatus because of the 2012-13 lockout and 2014 Winter Olympics.
