KELOWNA - Highway 97 will be shut down completely overnight in north Kelowna for utility work connected to the road’s widening.
The Ministry of Transportation says the highway will be closed from Sexsmith Road and Old Vernon Road to Edwards Road from 9 p.m. Saturday, April 30, to 5 a.m. Sunday, May 1.
During that time, northbound traffic will detour east along Old Vernon Road, north on Acland Road and west on Edwards Road.
Southbound traffic will detour west on Edwards Road, south on Adams Road and east on Sexsmith Road.
The utility work is part of the widening of Highway 97 to six lanes from Highway 33 to Edwards Road.
The $60-million project actually began last year with the realignment of Finns Road and will continue this year with the $36-million sub contract awarded to Emil Anderson Construction Inc. a Kelowna company.
Both the federal and provincial governments are funding the project with B.C. paying $41.5 million and Ottawa putting in $18 million through the Building Canada Fund.
