Highlights of November 27 Council meeting

Outdoor events summary

Kelowna Council heard a staff update on this year’s Outdoor Event season. In 2017, more than 150 outdoor event permits were issued to a variety of walks, races, festivals, parades, weddings, films, and more. Nineteen events were affected by weather, namely floods and smoke, but 18 were able to go ahead. Key challenges faced by event organizers continue to be hosting costs and the limited amount of suitable event space outside the downtown.

Climate Action Plan update

Council was presented with draft actions and targets to include in the Community Climate Action Plan Update. The draft actions provide mitigation options — those actions that can be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit the extent of climate change — through land use planning, transportation options, building requirements and waste services. The report also recommended short-term targets as well as longer term objectives to ease Kelowna’s contribution to climate change. Next steps include public and stakeholder consultations.
