High water leaves behind perfect mosquito habitat in Central Okanagan

KELOWNA - Floods bring bugs and the Central Okanagan Regional District is reminding residents of its mosquito control program even before the waters subside.

While this year’s freshet flooding is not likely to match that of 2017, communications officer Bruce Smith said in a press release, it will still leave behind pools of standing water, perfect breeding ground for mosquitos.

Smith said residents can help control mosquitos around their homes by removing standing water sources such as rain barrels, garden pots, birdbaths and unused swimming pools.

Duka Environmental is under contract to provide larval mosquito control using the bacterial herbicide VectoBac 200G, Smith said, and will be sampling and treating water accumulations in low-lying areas.

While complete elimination isn’t possible, Smith said Central Okanagan residents (with the exception of most of West Kelowna) can report mosquito concerns by calling 1-800-681-3472.
