High temperature records could be broken across the Southern Interior today

Kamloops is likely to break a hot temperature weather record for today, May 15, 2018, according to Environment Canada.

Unseasonably warm temperatures are causing high temperature records to be broken across the Southern Interior — and that trend could continue today.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says Kamloops is the most likely city in the region to break a record today, May 15. The forecast high temperature of 33 Celsius will likely surpass the previous record of 31.1 C recorded on the same date in 1973.

Kelowna and Vernon could also break high temperature records today. The record high for May 15 in Kelowna is 30.6 C, which is close to today's forecast high.

"We’ll be close because we’re forecasting a high of about 31 C," Lundquist says. "Records will likely be broken in a couple or three of the stations."

The record for Vernon for this day is 30 C and Lundquist says temperatures will likely come close to or surpass that.

Lundquist says Penticton likely won't break any records today, as the highest temperature on record for May 15 is 32.8 C.

A record was set in Kelowna yesterday, with a high of 30.2 C, surpassing the 1973 record of 30 C.

As for the forecast for the Victoria Day long weekend, Lundquist says Thompson-Okanagan residents can expect temperatures to cool down while still staying above seasonal normals, and there will be a chance of showers in some areas.
