High E. coli leads to swimming advisory on Kelowna's Rotary Beach

Beach goers at Rotary Beach in Kelowna are being advised not to go in the water after high levels of E.coli bacteria were found.

Although the beach is not closed, swimming advisory signs have been posted in Rotary Beach Park to warn swimmers of the risky water conditions.

The very young, elderly and swimmers with weakened immunity are the most at risk of developing gastrointestinal illness, eye, ear and throat symptoms as well as skin rashes. Although, it is predicted that one percent of all bathers may contract stomach problems from the current water conditions, according to a City of Kelowna news release issued today, Sept. 8.

“We’re seeing a greater amount of plant material in that part of Okanagan Lake as well as a higher population of ducks and geese, which can result in higher bacterial counts,” said Blair Stewart, Parks Services Manager, in the release. “We are asking the public not to swim or engage in water-related recreation activities at Rotary Beach until the beach water quality advisory has been lifted.”

Beach water quality can fluctuate due to a number of different factors, including currents, runoff, creek outflows, waterfowl and animal waste.

When E. coli levels are back in line with the permitted amount of 200 per 100-millilitre sample (as stated in the Guidelines for Canadian Recreational Water Quality) signs will be removed from the beach and swimmers with be able to enjoy the water again without fear of harm.

You can find other designated beaches with now swimming restrictions here.
