UPDATE: Health officials issue drug alert for Kamloops; counterfeit said to be 'impressive'

An alert has been issued by Interior Health for an illicit counterfeit drug being sold in Kamloops containing fentanyl and acetaminophen.

The drug in question is a white pill with ‘TEC’ stamp, and is being sold as Percocet.

Kile McKenna is a technician at Ask Wellness, where the drug was tested, and he said it's one of the most impressive counterfeits he's ever seen.

Interior Health says there is a high risk of opioid overdose for users of this substance, and McKenna recommends users pick up fentanyl test strips to test from home, a benefit being they can remain anonymous.

The alert remains in effect until Feb. 24.

Interior Health officials, meanwhile, recommends that users get their drugs checked at overdose prevention or supervised consumption sites, to avoid using drugs and alcohol together and to not use drugs alone.

“If you must use while alone, consider using the Lifeguard app which can connect you with 9-1-1 emergency responders if you overdose,” according to Interior Health.

For more information on drug alerts and safe consumption sites, visit the health authority’s website here.
