Grassfire caused by fireworks near Kamloops quickly doused

Kamloops firefighters put out a grassfire north of Batchelor Heights on Sunday night after a report of fireworks in the area.

Kamloops RCMP and Kamloops Fire Rescue responded to the Lac Du Bois Grasslands area around 10:35 a.m., Oct. 17, to douse the flames, but did not find who had shot the fireworks.

There was no property damage, but that does not rule out the possibility of criminal charges, according to Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Const. Crystal Evelyn.

"It all depends on what the investigation uncovers. An example of charges without damage was the Columbia Street fire in the summer," Evelyn said in an email to iNFOnews.ca.

On Aug. 12, on off-duty Kamloops RCMP officer stopped a man who was lighting fires along Columbia Street near 1 Avenue, where there was a risk that a grassfire could easily spread to nearby homes and structures due to the ongoing drought this summer.

He faced charges of mischief and obstructing a police officer.

The investigation into the fireworks and subsequent grassfire remains open, and anyone with information can contact Kamloops RCMP.

Kamloops Fire Rescue did not respond to a request for comment.
