Good chance of 'perfect white Christmas' in the Okanagan; not Kamloops

Environment Canada defines a perfect white Christmas as one with at least 2 cm of snow on the ground and some snow falling during the day.

That worked out well for Kamloops and the Okanagan last year with some snow and subzero temperatures recorded throughout the region.

Given the amount of snow on the ground now and the fact temperatures are not expected to rise above the freezing level through Christmas Day, surpassing that minimum on the ground is a sure thing.

But, whether there will actually be snow falling on Christmas Day is not so sure.

Precipitation amounts are always harder to forecast than temperatures. Right now, the Okanagan shows a 60% chance of flurries on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

For Kamloops, though, those days are only forecast to be cloudy.

The Environment Canada forecast is for snow throughout the Thompson-Okanagan on Friday.

Historically, a white Christmas is more likely in Kelowna than Kamloops.

Since 1955, Kelowna has had a white Christmas 64% of the time compared to 52% in Kamloops, according to Environment Canada.

Christmas should also see a break from the very cold weather earlier in the week, with high temperatures forecast to be -3 Celsius in Kamloops and -4 C in the Okanagan on Christmas Day.

That compares to highs of -20 C to -23 C in Kamloops for much of the week., -15 C to -19 C in the Okanagan.
