Defending champ Jhonattan Vegas leads after 9 holes at Telus World Skins Game

HALIFAX - Defending champion Jhonattan Vegas had the lead with five skins and $85,000 after the front nine at the Skins Game at Halifax's Glen Arbour Golf Course on Monday.

The 27-year-old Venezuelan was followed by Calgary's Stephen Ames, Northern Ireland's Paul Casey and American Lucas Glover with one skin each for $15,000. The ninth hole was carried over for when play resumes Tuesday.

The players fed off the large and enthusiastic gallery, with the five amiable pros carrying on for the crowd.

Vegas asked to borrow Ames' driver after admiring his strong tee shot on the fourth hole, and Ames leaned directly over a crouching Paul Casey to help read a putt.

Vegas later found himself in trouble and performed some lighthearted crowd control before his wedge from the gallery, and Glover finished up the round with Casey's backup driver after discovering his was broken.

Vegas finished last year's event at the Fairmont Springs Golf Course in Banff, Alta., with seven skins and $140,000.
