Kelowna Centre now has its first nominee for BC United Party.
Michael Humer worked as a thoracic surgeon for over 25 years and an important motivator during his career was his passion for public service, he says. This is what is driving him to become the BC United candidate and, if all goes his way, the MLA for the new riding.
“I’ve enjoyed my surgical career immensely and for certain, when you treat patients surgically you get to see what’s absolutely important to them and, first and foremost, you bring your compassion and your collaboration to work with the patient towards achieving the best care for them. I want to continue providing community service through, not just healthcare but also looking at other issues of the riding. I am passionate about it and I am compassionate and patient and I want to listen to what people want and try to achieve those services.”
Humer said he chose BC United because he feels that is the party that best represents his and the community’s interests.
“BC United really serves the center and the right part of the political continuum as a free-enterprise and individual service component of the electorate and this community has had a long-standing representation and it’s very successfully represented Kelowna and I think that speaks to where the people of Kelowna and to where my sensitivities are," he said.
Those sensitivities transpire through the issues Humer wants to address. The aspiring politician has already identified a few which he says are obvious to anyone living in the riding, but he also vows to listen to the constituents of the new riding to represent them to the best of his abilities.
“Obviously a big issue is healthcare, the high cost of living and housing are significant challenges specifically in Kelowna Centre so I would put significant effort into that as well. The mental health of all of our citizens in the riding and the general wellness of the people as well as the individual and community safety concerns and ultimately keeping Kelowna a great place to live, preserving our natural spaces and working collaboratively with the people to get them the best services,” Humer says. “I love to listen to people and part of this process will be to communicate, but really, listen. So the people of Kelowna Centre will determine what are the most important issues for them at this time and those are the issues that I will take forward and try to represent to the best of my abilities.”
Michael Humer says he will be dedicating himself full-time to the process and is currently waiting for his nomination to be approved by the party.
There are currently no other nominees for the BC United candidacy or the riding. No other party has announced candidates yet.
Kelowna Centre is a new riding to Kelowna which now means there are four ridings between West Kelowna and Kelowna as opposed to three at the last provincial elections; West Kelowna-Peachland, Kelowna Centre, Kelowna-Mission and Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream.
The election is set to take place on or before Oct. 19, 2024.
