Get ready for rain and cool temperatures this week in the Okanagan

Today's sun and cloud mix in the Okanagan could lead to showers this afternoon, in a forecast calling for more unsettled conditions in the valley this week.

Those mixed weather conditions experienced in the Okanagan over the long weekend are set to continue through this week.

Environment Canada meteorologist Carmen Hartt says unsettled conditions will be with us until later this week when an approaching system from the southeast is expected to bring bands of precipitation and a drop in temperatures.

Hartt says temperatures on Thursday and Friday could be five to 10 degrees cooler than normal for this time of year.

“We’ll get a break on Saturday, but that will be short-lived, as it looks like the unsettled pattern is going to continue,” she says.

A look at the long-term forecast is suggesting a trend towards drier and warmer temperatures for the last week of May, Hartt says.

The Okanagan should see a mix of sun and cloud today, May 19, with a 30 per cent chance of showers and possible thunderstorms along mountain ridges this afternoon. Today’s high is expected to reach 23 Celsius with a low of 9 C tonight.

Wednesday should become mainly cloudy by noon with a 60 per cent chance of showers and a high of 20 C. Winds are expected to become south at 20 km/h in the afternoon.

Thursday and Friday should see mainly cloudy conditions highs of 17 C on Thursday and only 10 C on Friday.

There is a 40 per cent chance of showers Thursday and into Thursday night with periods of rain anticipated Friday.

The upcoming weekend is looking pretty nice at this point with a high of 21 C under a mix of sun and cloud on Saturday and a high of 21 C Sunday under a sun and cloud mix.

The warming trend continues Monday with a high of 24 C expected under a sun and cloud mix.

Normal temperatures at this time of year in the Okanagan are highs of 20 C and lows of 7 C.
