WEST KELOWNA - A bear visited a West Kelowna neighbourhood for a late night snack of garbage left at the curb ahead of collection day.
Okanagan Westside WildSafe B.C. coordinator Andrea Tait says in a Facebook post they were tagging garbage carts with warning labels last night, Sept. 28, in the Glenrosa, Tallus Ridge and Shannon Woods neighbourhoods of West Kelowna but a bear made it to some of them first.
Because the garbage carts were at the curb prematurely, bears had easy access to them, Tait says in the post. The carts must be stored securely until the morning of pickup, not the night before, because bears are attracted to the smell of garbage.
She says there were more than 60 carts already at the curb in Glenrosa, Tallus Ridge and Shannon Woods the night before the scheduled collection.
"Even if the bears have not accessed your garbage in the past, it IS contributing to attracting them," Tait says.
