KELOWNA - If the stress of the holidays is getting you down here's something that might lift your spirits — a group of kind-hearted people will be downtown on Boxing Day giving out free hugs.

The tradition started six years ago when friends of Wayne Cobb decided to honour his memory. Cobb died in 2010 when he hit a deer while motorcycling near Grand Forks.

Angie Clowry is one of those friends who has been helping with the event since the first time they gathered. She says on her Facebook page Cobb wanted to give away free hugs to strangers as a way to spread happiness and love.

“In his honour a few of us get together... and we hug anyone who needs or wants to be hugged,” Clowry says. “There is quite a collection of people who walk downtown during the holidays. Some out on a brisk walk, some training for a marathon, families enjoying the time together and a few homeless people who haven’t… received a hug in years.”

Cobb is described as a humble man who exuded love, put relationships first, was honest about how his struggles benefitted him and how a random act of kindness not only helps those who receive them but fill the hearts of those of us who choose to give them, she says.

Anyone who wishes to join the group is asked to be downtown in front of the Sails between noon and 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 26.
