Fraudsters spoofing South Okanagan RCMP detachment phone numbers in latest scam

South Okanagan RCMP are warning the public about the latest phone and internet fraud scam.

RCMP have received reports of a police impersonation scam in which fraudsters spoof the Summerland or Penticton RCMP non-emergency lines by using software that allows them to change their display name and phone number so it appears to be coming from the RCMP detachment.

In some cases these fraudsters are impersonating local police officers by name, tricking unsuspecting victims to think they are receiving a call from the RCMP, when this is not the case.

Calling the fraud ‘concerning’ Summerland RCMP say they do not solicit personal information about bank accounts or SIN numbers by phone, nor do they require individuals to withdraw funds from their bank account.

Police media relations Cpl. Madonna Saunderson says if you have any reason to question the legitimacy of a call from someone claiming to be the RCMP,  a financial institution or another government agency, hang up and call the organization yourself.

When in doubt, hang up immediately, Saunderson said in a release issued this afternoon.

Summerland and Penticton residents are encouraged to report this or any other fraud to the Summerland or Penticton RCMP, as well as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online at this website, or call 1-888-495-8501.
