For one time only, a traumatic yet inspiring documentary film will be screening at the Paramount Theatre in Kamloops.

The screening for the film “For Love” takes place next Wednesday, May 11 at 7 p.m. and is hosted by the Secwepemc Child & Family Services Agency.

The film, which is narrated by Shania Twain, exposes the link between residential schools and the 29,000 Indigenous children and youth in Canada’s child welfare system, according to a media release by the agency.

The trailer includes a soundtrack of cultural throat singing and drumming and videography of different places and people in North America. Elders across the country share their stories and perspectives on how best to move into the future in order to preserve their diverse cultures.

The picture will feature appearances by director, co-writer and co-producer Matt Smiley, as well as co-writer and co-producer Mary Teegee, said the agency.

“The horrors of residential schools are finally starting to be understood by non-Indigenous Canadians and Americans,” said producer Mary Teegee in the release. I wanted this movie to create awareness about the generational trauma caused by residential schools but it also celebrates the resilience of our people and shows how communities across the country are rebuilding family and rich cultures.”

Tickets will be $15, with $1 going to Kamloops Film Society and all subsequent profits going to Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc — Le Estcwicwéy (The Missing).

Tickets will be available at the door and online.
