iN VIDEO: Party animals crash South Okanagan koi pond
Oliver resident Edwin Dukes is on holiday with his wife on the Sunshine Coast and recently checked his outdoor security cameras only to find four bears having a pool party in his koi pond.
“I believe it’s a mom and three cubs, they’ve been around the property in recent weeks but never in the pond,” Dukes said. “One cub is cinnamon colour, the other two are black.”
His property is on six acres in the midst of vineyards and orchards where he typically only sees deer roaming around.
The bears in the video are seen wandering down a picturesque pathway and plopping into the fountain fed pool. They paw at each other, touch noses and play fight.
The koi pond is stocked with fish that are two decades old.
“We don’t know how many fish have been killed,” he said. “I had another video where we saw a bear flipping a fish around, it was a big one, but couldn’t tell if he ate it.”
A friend of Dukes is heading over to see if and what damage has occurred to the pond and fish, and set up deterrents in the form of ammonia-soaked rags around the property.
“Hopefully it works, I don’t want it to become a party pad, but they sure had a great time in that pond.”
