Five people arrested after shots fired near TRU in Kamloops

A condo unit at 775 McGill Rd. near Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops is one of the scene's police are investigating after a report of shots fired, Friday, Sept. 16, 2022.

Kamloops RCMP officers were spotted at multiple locations in the Sahali neighbourhood this morning after a reported shooting at a condo near Thompson Rivers University.

Witnesses in the area told iNFOnews.ca they believe the shots fired incident was isolated to a condo unit on McGill Road.

Kamloops RCMP haven't said whether the incident was targeted, but a window to one of the first floor units is broken. It appears to be the only residential unit with surveillance cameras on its outside.

A business owner and a building maintenance person each told iNFOnews.ca the unit was known to police for possible criminal activity.

Police were called to the area where gunshots were heard on the 700 block of McGIll Road. The apparently targeted condo unit was at 775 McGill Rd. but police taped off the entire area this morning, Sept. 16.

Three people were arrested by 8:30 a.m., but two more people were caught later in the morning, Cpl. Crystal Evelyn told iNFOnews.ca.

She didn't say whether any of those people were targeted in the shooting, or whether anyone was inside the condo unit when the shooting was reported. She also said it's an "assumption" to say the residential unit was the target of the shooting as police are investigating several locations in Sahali.

"At this time, no one has been located with injuries and police believe there are no suspects or victims unaccounted for," a Kamloops RCMP news release from around 3 p.m., Sept. 16, reads.

Police cordoned off most of the access to a condo complex across from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops after a shooting, Friday, Sept. 16, 2022.

At least one suspect appears to have been caught near Notre Dame Drive at the Summit Shopping Centre. A restaurant owner nearby told iNFOnews.ca he watched police searching for evidence in dumpsters and planters in the parking lot around 8:30 a.m.

Cpl. Evelyn didn't say whether or not officers recovered any guns during the investigation.

Police are looking for dash cam footage from the public. Areas of interest include the complex at the 700 block of McGill Road, along with Columbia Street West and Summit Drive.
