Hundreds of firefighters from all over the world will gather at a park in Kamloops this fall to go head-to-head in mentally and physically challenging competitions.

The 2024 FireFit World and Canadian Championships will be held at McArthur Island Park in September where roughly 350 first responders will compete in male, female, mixed and team races.

“In addition to being an exciting event with qualifying rounds and a championship final, the FireFit event provides a positive and informative light on first responders,” reads a release from the Kamloops Sports Council issued on March 6.

The first Canadian National FireFit Competition hosted was held in Vancouver in 1994 and attracted roughly 50,000 spectators.

The following year seven events were held across the country with 105 participating fire departments.

The popularity of FireFit events has grown over the past 25 years with contenders coming from every province and territory in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, England and the Middle East.

This year’s events will be held at the west end of McArthur Island from Sept. 15 to 29 during the day. A formal schedule with additional sub-activities isn’t available yet, but there will be beer gardens, kids’ courses and other family-friendly activities to check out.

Volunteers and financial support is needed for the event. Go here for more information.
