Black smoke from a garage fire in West Kelowna yesterday afternoon could be seen for kilometres and when crews arrived they found intense flames and heat from the burning structure.

The detached garage was fully involved when crews rolled up at a home on Horizon Drive at around 3 p.m. yesterday, Oct. 18, according to a West Kelowna Fire Rescue media release.

"Intense flames and heat from the burning garage, which was filled with tires, electronics and motorcycles, ignited an adjacent car, torched the sides of two travel trailers and a shed, and melted siding off of two neighbouring homes," assistant fire chief Brent Watson said in the release.

The siding on the primary residence was also damaged by the heat, along with yard furniture and ornamental trees.

The owner suffered a minor burn trying to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher. The property is insured.

The fire, which is under investigation, is not suspicious and was "likely electrical in nature," Watson said.
